What is a subculture?

Subculture, according to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, is a group that has beliefs and behaviors that are different from the main groups within a culture or society. Basically, it is a distinct group within a group that have different interests and beliefs.

Every community and culture has its own subcultures. Like in UP Diliman, there are various kinds of subcultures that can be found. Those subcultures can sometimes be distinguished through the specific clothing that they wear. I roamed the grounds and premises of UP in search of sub-cultural groups:

Sports and Recreation

I found subcultural groups whose interests lies on a specific sport or recreation that they are inclined into. They wear clothes appropriate to their interests and activities.

Personality and Style

There are subcultures who present their personality and style through  the clothing they wear.

Culture and Nation

There are also cultures that migrated to other cultures (cultural diasporas) that forms a subculture within the culture they have migrated into. A great example of that is the exchange students here in UP.

Factions and Blocs

Subcultures can also arise from a group of people who are united for a particular purpose.

Beliefs

There are subcultures whose religious and cultural beliefs are evident in the clothing they wear, thus making their subculture discernible.

That’s the end of my quest. I hope I helped you understand subcultures more. 😉
